The company says the closures are part of a "process of streamlining operations and underperforming locations."
Most of the closures were located in Michigan and Ohio. A spokesman for American Blue Ribbon confirmed one location in Greenwood was shut down. Three locations are still in operation in Carmel, Edinburgh and Evansville.
"A member of our Sr. Leadership team was at each restaurant this morning to personally deliver this news and to provide each and every team member with a severance agreement," the spokesman said. "We felt that the best way to handle this news was to deliver the news in person. This insured that each employee was dealt with individually and in person."
All unopened food items will be donated to charitable organizations. The company says it is committed to the Max & Erma’s brand and will be announcing the "next phase" of a brand revitalization next week.
American Blue Ribbon Holdings acquired the Max & Erma’s brand in 2010.
