INDOT, Martinsville Unveil I-69 Design Elements

The Indiana Department of Transportation and the city of Martinsville have released conceptual design elements for the city’s segment of the I-69 extension. They include an entrance monument, sound and retaining walls, and bridge and overpass elements. 

The city’s portion of the interstate extension runs from just south of Indian Creek to one mile north of State Road 44. Martinsville Mayor Shannon Kohl says more work is needed to finalize the designs and the public is being asked to provide input on three final design elements, including the texture of walls and barriers, the style of ornamental fencing, and the type of ornamental lighting fixtures.

The task force is comprised of Martinsville residents who have worked with the INDOT project team to develop the package of aesthetic elements for the bridges, overpasses, sound walls, and retaining walls, which feature a combination of brick and limestone features.

"Until now the I-69 Section 6 Martinsville segment has been lines on paper, just design plans and highway maps," said Kohl. "But today, because of the hard work of the Martinsville Aesthetics Task Force, we can actually visualize what parts of the highway will look like when it’s complete."

The city and INDOT have set up an online survey for residents to not only view the current design elements but submit their input on the elements that have yet to be finalized.
