The Ports of Indiana says Chip Jaenichen will discuss new opportunities for maritime shipping as a means to relieve gridlock on U.S. highways and create new economic opportunities.
Jaenichen, who was appointed Maritime Administrator in 2014 by President Obama, will review the National Maritime Transportation Strategy and talk about how maritime transportation can complement rail and highway shipping.
"Administrator Jaenichen has provided tremendous leadership for the maritime industry and has made great strides in demonstrating how our nation’s inland waterways can provide real solutions for the U.S. transportation system," said Ports of Indiana CEO Rich Cooper. "As a champion of marine highways, he has shown a clear vision for developing programs that support multimodal transportation."
Jaenichen’s visit to Indy comes as the state is exploring the addition of a fourth port. The Ports of Indiana is currently evaluating whether a former coal plant in Lawrenceburg would be suitable for a port, something the city’s mayor, Kelly Mollaun, said would be huge for the region.
The Indiana Logistics Summit is being held November 16-17 at the Indiana Convention Center and is being co-hosted by the Ports of Indiana, Conexus Indiana and Purdue University. In addition to Jaenichen, representatives from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Federal Aviation Administration and the Indiana Department of Transportation, among others, will speak at the event.
