Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson has accepted the Midwest Deal of the Year Award from Bond Buyer Magazine for her part in negotiating a $29 million bond sale that financed the final stage of the airport’s massive runway expansion project.
The city says the process included Freeman-Wilson and previous Airport Director BR Lane working with underwriters and financial advisors to develop a plan to pay for the work through the market.
Freeman-Wilson said called the project "a complex, yet critical investment needed to drive growth at the Gary/Chicago International Airport and throughout the Northwest Indiana region. On behalf of all those who worked to accomplish this innovative funding solution, we are honored to be recognized with Bond Buyer’s Midwest Deal of the Year Award."
The publication honored the mayor and other winners at a Thursday gala in New York City.
