Logistics Industry Boot Camps Focus on Future

Subscribe NowA logistics industry nonprofit headquartered in Indianapolis is taking a page from the technology industry to prepare the next generation of the workforce. The National Transportation Center recently wrapped up its first-ever, four-day boot camp and says more of the intensive training events are being developed. The boot camp involved site visits, networking opportunities and job skills instruction.
In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, NTC Chief Business Officer Tom Weisenbach says participants in the initial group gained logistics skills they can use right away. "The really neat thing is a handful of the folks — I believe five of the folks in that first, introductory boot camp — have all got jobs already in the industry within four weeks," he said. "They learned a lot in about a four-and-a-half-day period, and now, the challenge is where do they go from there? We’ve provided them with a basic assessment of what their skill sets were. We’ve given them some guidance and direction on what additional training they’d probably want to have before they start applying for jobs."
Additional training plans from NTC include partnering with companies on an advanced technical training "hub" that uses its facilities. He also says the organization wants to grow its hands-on training efforts through its workforce incubator, which Weisenbach says serves to offer baseline industry knowledge and learn basic safety and employment skills, as well as instill a mindset of constant improvement.
