The program, The On-Site Learning Alliance, will provide an opportunity for the center to partner with local organizations to provide basic adult literacy programming.
The Literacy Center is currently providing programming at the Southside Stars Youth Zone at Tepe Park and at the Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Libraries Central Library. The center will be expanding its services to McCollough Library and Alexandrian Library in Mt. Vernon. A program at Culver Learning Center is also scheduled to begin this fall.
The Basic Adult Literacy program offers free, remedial reading instruction for adults 18 and older. Following an initial assessment, the course materials are tailored to fit the learner’s specific needs. Students are given a foundation of literacy instruction, and after a process, are paired with an tutor who meets with them on a regular basis.
“We are excited to bring our program to adults who need our services, but face the barrier of transportation to our facility,” said Literacy Center Executive Director, Regina Hamman, said in a news release. “This new program enables us to remove that barrier, and set the adult learner on a path to achieve their goals whether that is to get a driver’s license, gain employment, move on to higher education, read to their family, or to simply live happier, healthier, more independent lives.”
