Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded more than $171 million to more than two dozen community foundations and partners through its Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow, or GIFT, initiative.
The grants are meant to address “priorities driven by the interests and needs of local communities,” the endowment said in a news release.
Ranging from $467,000 to $20 million, the grants will fund efforts such as neighborhood and downtown revitalization projects, affordable housing, strengthening early childhood education offerings, and improved delivery of social services.
“These grants are the culmination of efforts to engage a broad cross section of community stakeholders in prioritizing communities’ needs and opportunities,” Ronni Kloth, the endowment’s vice president for community development, said in the release. “The proposed programs and activities are compelling and hold great promise to enhance the quality of life in Indiana communities for years to come.”
The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County received two grants totaling $30 million, and the Legacy Foundation in Merrillville also received a $20 million grant.

The latest round is the eighth phase of the endowment’s GIFT initiative. The endowment invited organizations from all 92 counties to participate and seek funding for projects.
