Greater Lafayette Commerce hopes to boost the region's economy by connecting local businesses to a southern Indiana military operation. The organization is holding a seminar next week to teach companies how to do business with Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center. The Lafayette group's Economic Development Director Jody Hamilton says there is untapped potential for businesses to collaborate on new products and license Crane-developed technology for commercial use.

News Release

Lafayette, Ind. — Anyone interested in learning more about opportunities available from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, are invited to a free workshop to be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 14, at Greater Lafayette Commerce, 337 Columbia St.

Reservations are requested and may be made online at www.greaterlafayettecommerce.com (under calendar), or by calling Greater Lafayette Commerce, 765/742-4044.

The workshop will be presented by three representatives from Crane—Brooke Pyne, Reggie Joslin and John Dement. It will include an overview of the Crane Division, a federal laboratory of the U.S. Department of the Navy in Crane, Ind. Topics will cover accessing technical assistance and equipment, collaborating with Crane, licensing Navy-developed technology for commercial use, and how a business or educational institution would do any of these.

Greater Lafayette Commerce, the area's nonprofit economic development organization, is hosting the workshop under a partnership agreement it has with Crane to promote cooperative ventures.

“We serve as a link, a facilitator for sharing information,” said Joseph Seaman, Greater Lafayette Commerce president and chief executive office. “This is an open door for area businesses to access Crane technology and showcase locally developed products, so we encourage anyone who wants to learn more to come this workshop.”

NSWC Crane holds 140 patents on technology developments, and has filed for some 150 more. Its main technology areas are: testing, manufacturing methods; first-responder, physical security, small arms and accessories, optics and lasers, pyrotechnics and demolition areas; antennas, sensors and communication devices; and software.
