The city of Kokomo this week announced the relaunch of the Kokomo Infill Program, which aims to transform vacant lots with new homes where blighted structures once stood.
The program follows a similar effort last year, which resulted in more than two dozen residential projects either completed or ongoing.
The city has identified 49 vacant lots that are either owned or maintained by the Kokomo Community Development Corp. Developers can acquire a lot for free after signing a development agreement that requires a completed residential structure be built within one year.
“We are looking to build new, single family homes on dozens of vacant lots scattered throughout the city,” Kokomo Mayor Tyler Moore said in a news release. “We are turning decades-long, vacant eyesores into new affordable housing for Kokomo families.”
The city said the program is open to developers of all sizes, as well as individuals and businesses. Preference will be given to developers “who can demonstrate financial ability and construction experience.”
