Kendallville Mayor SuzAnne Handshoe is taking a leave of absence. The News Sun reports Handshoe, who just started her fourth term, will be taking time off to deal with bone marrow cancer treatment.
The publication reports the former Marine has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
During her re-election campaign last year, Handshoe pushed for a continued emphasis on economic development and was planning to launch an alliance among local manufacturers and educators that takes aim at a skills gap between area employers and the work force. She won in November, running unopposed.
Handshoe is expected to miss some governmental functions and meetings.
