The Sachem is awarded annually to “recognize a lifetime of excellence and moral virtue that has brought credit and honor to Indiana.”
“Jim Morris has lived an extraordinary life with a constant focus on serving mankind at home and abroad. While his efforts began in Indianapolis by transforming our state’s capital city profile to advance sports, citizenship and public service, his deep devotion to servant leadership later called him around the world,” Gov. Holcomb said.
Morris also serves on the Indiana University Board of Trustees and is the U.S. permanent representative to the UNICEF executive board. Morris also served as executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, where he met with numerous heads of state in more than 80 countries to address ways to reduce hunger worldwide.
The Terre Haute native has won numerous awards and honors, including Indiana University’s President’s Medal for Excellence and the Indiana Black Expo’s Spirit of Freedom Award.
Morris will be presented with the award during a June 25 ceremony.
