The Indiana State Teachers Association has named Hilda Kendrick of Utica Elementary School in Jeffersonville Hoosier Educator of the Year. The organization has also announced its Education Support Professional of the Year, Friend of Education and Young Activist awards. April 28, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Hilda M. Kendrick, a kindergarten teacher at Utica Elementary School in Jeffersonville, has been named by the Indiana State Teachers Association and the Horace Mann Insurance Company as the 2014 recipient of the prestigious Hoosier Educator of the Year Award. ISTA President Teresa Meredith presented Kendrick with the award last weekend at ISTA's Spring Representative Assembly held in Indianapolis.

A kindergarten teacher in the Greater Clark County Schools, Kendrick is a member of the Greater Clark Education Association. She also serves as chair of ISTA's Minority Affairs Committee. She has twice been named Greater Clark Teacher of the Year.

As Indiana's recipient, she will serve as ISTA's nominee for the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence Award to be presented in Washington, D.C. later this year.

“This award symbolizes the best of advocacy, mentoring and educating, not only our students, but their parents and the public about the importance of great public schools and the positive impact public education has on all Hoosier children,” Meredith said.

ISTA also presented major awards to:

-Robin Endris, Michigan City, Education Support Professional of the Year Award

-Rep. Kreg Battles, Vincennes, ISTA Friend of Education Award

-Deb Dalley, Shelbyville; and Bryant Mosbey, Evansville, Community Service Awards

-Dorthy Epple, Fort Wayne, Dave Hanna Golden Touch Award

-Jackie Ridge, Sullivan, J.D. Miller Young Activist Award
