Big Lots announced this week that 132 stores across the county will reopen this month under the direction of its new owner, Variety Wholesalers. Among them is a location in Jasper, which is the only Indiana store on the list.
The Columbus, Ohio-based discount retailer filed for bankruptcy last September and was set to close all stores after a purchase agreement with private equity firm Nexus Capital Management LP fell through.
However, in late December, Big Lots said it reached a deal with Variety Wholesalers parent Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, in which 200 to 400 stores would continue to operate under the Big Lots brand.
Last month, Big Lots reopened nine stores ahead of this week’s announcement that 132 more would reopen.
The reopenings were set to occur in two phases–one on May 1 and another on May 15. It was not immediately clear when the Jasper store, located at 195 US-231, would reopen.
“The customer response to the newly expanded assortment of fresh inventory and great deals has been overwhelmingly positive,” Variety Wholesalers CEO Lisa Seigies said in a news release. “The Big Lots stores opening in May show our continued commitment to providing the best value to our customers with apparel for the family, everyday needs for the home, kitchen, and pantry plus a huge selection of famous brands. I couldn’t be prouder of the dedicated team who made it possible for us to serve these communities again.”
Variety Wholesalers did not indicate if any additional Indiana stores would reopen in the future.
