The college says Sue Smith will be part of the national infrastructure panel that is tasked with advising the Biden administration on it’s “Build Back Better” initiative and other infrastructure proposals.
Smith is the vice president of technology and applied science and corporate executive for advanced manufacturing at Ivy Tech. She was appointed by the National Skills Coalition and Business Leaders United for Workforce Partnerships.
The college says she and other leaders will meet in the coming months with White House advisors, representatives of the departments of energy and transportation, and Congressional leadership “to help shape federal recovery policies for the infrastructure sector.”
“The lack of digital skills, broadband access, and an increased need for STEM labor could be the perfect storm for employers, particularly manufacturers,” Smith said in a news release. “Federal and state recovery initiatives to support adopting new technology and upskilling the current and future workforce with a focus on economic inclusion is critical to a better infrastructure.”
The infrastructure panel is one of four that have been established to make sure federal recovery initiatives include investments in job training and support services. The other panels include healthcare, manufacturing, and retail and hospitality.
