Twenty students from Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers high schools are taking part in the program at the Ivy Tech campus in Noblesville. The Hamilton Southeastern students, referred to as CyberRoyals, and the Fishers students, referred to as Code Red, will assist teachers and students using various forms of technology such as laptop computers, iPads, mobile devices and technology networks.
"With 3,000 students and several hundred adults in each building, the need for tech support is enormous,” said Phil Lederach, director of secondary education for Hamilton Southeastern Schools. “Many of the CyberRoyals and Code Red students are skilled in the use of technology, but few have any type of formal training. They have learned by trial-and-error, but could be much more helpful with training.”
Through the program the students will take two Microsoft Comptia A+ certifications which will qualify them to work as IT support professionals. Financial support has been provided for the program by Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation, helping make the program free for the students.
Ivy Tech Hamilton County’s new data center holds the program. The center has a data network, two computer labs as well as a Cisco switching gear and computer servers. Students will have hands on experience with the Cisco gear and servers in classes offered through the program. Ivy Tech Hamilton County will utilize the data center to offer computing and informatics classes including software development, cyber security-information assurance, informatics, network infrastructure and information technology support.
“Hamilton County business leaders have indicated a high demand for employees with information technology skills,” said Ivy Tech Hamilton County Campus President Dan Clark, Ph.D. “Ivy Tech Hamilton County plans to work with employers throughout the county to train a high skills workforce.”
The IT classes for Hamilton Southeastern Schools began June 14 and end June 27.
