IURC Chairman Jim Atterholt to Retire

Subscribe NowIndiana Utility Regulatory Commission Chairman Jim Atterholt plans to retire from public service, effective January 12, 2018. He was appointed chairman of the IURC by Governor Holcomb in February. Governor Mitch Daniels originally appointed Atterholt as chairman of the commission, and he served from 2010 to 2014. Atterholt also served as chief of staff to Governor Mike Pence from 2014 through 2016.
Before serving at the commission, he was commissioner for the Indiana Department of Insurance under Governor Daniels for more than four years. Atterholt was elected and served two terms as a member of the Indiana General Assembly from 1998 to 2002. As a State Representative, he served on the House Commerce, Economic Development and Technology Committee, which had jurisdiction over all utility-related legislation. Atterholt also was a member of the Environmental Affairs Committee, as well as the Labor Committee. He worked as director of government affairs for AT&T-Indiana from 2003 to 2004. He also has worked as chief of staff in Washington, D.C., and later as district director in Indiana for a member of the United States Congress where his responsibilities included energy issues.
The Fort Wayne native received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. Atterholt is a member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners. He previously served as a member of the board of directors for the Organization of MISO States and the Organization of PJM States.
With Atterholt’s retirement, the IURC Nominating Committee must convene to evaluate candidates and then submit the nominations of three individuals to the governor to fill the vacated Commissioner position.
