IUPUI Spearheading Motorsports Study
IUPUI and the United States Motorsports Association are partnering on what they call the first ever nationwide economic impact study of motorsports. In addition to estimating a financial impact, the study will focus on additional benefits including STEM education, military innovations and charitable contributions.
The Sports Innovation Institute at IUPUI has been working on a framework for the study. In addition to tracking the impact of attendance and race tracks, the study will spotlight the economic activity generated from owning an operating a racecar. The school says the research will "follow the money trail" from the race car to spending on products, services and equipment that occurs nearly every weekend at events throughout the United States.
The USMA says, once the report is complete, it will release it to the racing industry and take it to local, state and federal elected officials. Lucas Oil Vice President Bob Patison says the effort is key to the association’s mission to "identify the economic benefits of this industry and…to advocate for motorsports at all levels of government."
The United States Motorsports Association was formed in early 2015 by a group of motorsports industry companies that identified the need for more data and better organization for competitive motorsports.
