IUPUI says the program aims to provide STEM education for underrepresented minorities. It will introduce high school students and teachers in the Indianapolis metro area to the field of nanotechnology. The program will be implemented by concentrated, two-week summer sessions, along with academic-year mentoring, support and research opportunities.
"IUPUI’s urban location and local workforce demands create an ideal platform to impact surrounding high-need schools and boost STEM interest within underrepresented groups," said Simon Rhodes, dean of the School of Science. "The multidisciplinary nature of nanotechnology will allow the program to inspire students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics."
The first NEST camp will occur this summer. IUPUI says it will host a total of 60 students and 45 teachers once the three-year program is complete. An estimated 3,000 additional students will also participate in the program using classroom learning sessions developed by the teachers.
The program is the joint work of the Integrated Nanosystems Development Institute and the STEM Education Research Institute, both of which are located on the IUPUI campus.
