IU South Bend Adds New Health Science Degree

Indiana University South Bend is adding to its health sciences degree offerings. Students interested in a career in diagnostic laboratory medicine will be able to pursue a degree in clinical laboratory science beginning this fall.
The new degree program will be located in the recently-renovated Riverside Hall on the South Bend campus, which will also be the home of the new IU South Bend Health and Wellness Center. The program will include courses focusing on hospital-based diagnostic testing and practices, such as clinical chemistry, hematology and microbiology, among others.
IU South Bend cites national surveys which say the average salary for medical laboratory professionals is $76,000 per year.
"There is a shortage of medical laboratory professionals here and across the country," said Ian Clift, director of the Clinical Laboratory Science Program. "Our goal is to address this shortage by being a source for medical laboratory professionals who excel in the 21st century health care environment."
The university says graduates will be prepared to take a national certification exam by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification.
