A sales and sales leadership professional who has decades of experience working with companies such as Microsoft, Oracle and HP has been named the new director for IU Executive Education.
John Courtney came out of semi-retirement to lead the division of the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs in an effort to expand leadership training to executives, organizations and students, IU said in a news release.
“I have an entrepreneurial approach to how we might grow audiences for Executive Education and the O’Neill School,” Courtney said in the release. “The O’Neill School saw value in that and believed I could help expand in areas they hadn’t thought about before.”
Growth plans are underway for the division. IU Executive Education is exploring options to expand training in Asia, Africa and Europe, to offer more online and on-demand leadership training courses, and to tackle emerging issues in leadership.
“We intend to offer a new program centered on AI policy management to help leaders think about how to manage the use of AI within their organizations,” Courtney said. “What guardrails do we need to put up? What’s ethical and what’s not ethical when using AI?”
Courtney has decades of experience in sales and sales leadership for technology companies. He has worked for HP, Microsoft, Oracle and, more recently, Veritas Technologies, according to his LinkedIn profile. He also served as director of development and alliances at the University of Dayton, his alma mater.
He replaced Sara Johnson, who retired from the position in January after serving in the role since 2015.
IU Executive Education provides graduate-level courses to people earning an executive master of public affairs degree or seeking public management certificates. IU Executive Education also provides custom leadership and management training programs for companies, nonprofits and units of government.
