Students interested in social work will have a new opportunity at Indiana University Fort Wayne later this year. The university is adding a Bachelor of Social Work degree, with classes beginning in August.

The degree will aid students who want to pursue a master’s degree in social work by cutting off nearly one-third of the needed academic credit hours and more than 300 hours of field experience needed to attain the graduate social work degree. Degree Coordinator Jan Nes says applications for the new degree are already being accepted.

"There is a high need in northeast Indiana for social workers at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels," Nes said.

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the need for social workers in mental health, addiction and health care settings will increase by more than 20 percent through 2026, which is three times the average job growth rate. Click here to learn more about the application process.
