A ceremony is set for next month to mark the start of construction of a nearly $5 million student center at Indiana University East. The building will be the fifth on the Richmond campus and is set to be complete in 2016. October 23, 2014

News Release

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Indiana University Board of Trustees, IU President Michael McRobbie and Indiana University East Chancellor Kathryn Cruz-Uribe will host a ground breaking ceremony for the Student Activities and Events Center at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11.

The ceremony will be held east of Springwood Hall, near the site where IU East will construct the center. The building will be the fifth constructed on the 182-acre campus. Initially, the campus planned to build an extension to Springwood Hall but site evaluations determined a new free-standing building was the best option.

Final plans to construct the Student Activities and Events Center were approved by the IU Board of Trustees approval during its August 8 meeting in Bloomington.

“We're very pleased that the IU Board of Trustees has approved the plan,” said Chancellor Kathryn Cruz-Uribe. “We look forward to moving ahead with this project and providing the additional space needed for classrooms, events and the home of Red Wolves athletics.”

In October 2012, IU East began raising funds for the project through its public campaign, “Bold Aspirations: The Campaign for the Student Events Center.” Through community and campus support, the campaign raised the remaining $1.7 million for the project. The university had already reserved $3 million for the project from savings and efficiencies.

The facility will promote student success through a comprehensive offering of programming in health and wellness, physical education, athletics, student activities and special events. Since 2007, student enrollment at IU East has over doubled to 4,573 in 2014.

The center is scheduled for completion in 2016.
