IU Art Museum Partners With Chinese Museum

Subscribe NowThe Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University in Bloomington has begun a new partnership with Tsinghua University Art Museum in China. The deal includes cooperation in exhibitions, programs, and staff and student exchanges over a multi-year period.
The partnership will begin with a new exhibition opening at the Tsinghua museum in September, curated by the Eskenazi Museum’s Jennifer McComas. "Americans Abroad: Landscape and Artistic Exchange, 1800-1920" will feature 50 European and American paintings, most of which are being drawn from the Eskenazi Museum of Art.
"Although several other American museums have sent exhibitions to China in recent years, this partnership is the first we know of between university art museums in the United States and China," McComas said. "This project provides a unique opportunity for the Eskenazi Museum of Art to share its collections with a new member of the international academic museum community. I am especially excited to highlight our collection of 19th-century American art, as this subject is still not very well known outside of the United States."
The partnership follows Eskenazi Museum of Art Director David Brenneman’s trip to Tsinghua last spring. The Chinese museum will also send an exhibition of Chinese scroll paintings from its permanent collection to the Bloomington museum, once its current renovations are complete.
This is the second partnership of its kind for the Eskenazi Museum of Art. In January, the museum announced a multi-year partnership and exchange with the Speed Art Museum in Louisville.
