Smith, who previously served as CEO of the foundation Bowling Green State University, succeeds Ron Carpenter, who stepped down from the role at the end of 2017.
Smith will also serve as interim vice president for the Division of Development at ISU. The foundation says Smith was hired through The Registry, which helps universities with funding senior leaders to fill interim roles.
"The Registry provided us with excellent candidates who have a wealth of experience, and I am very pleased to have someone of Doug’s caliber serve in this interim role," said ISU President Deborah Curtis. "I look forward to working with him to advance our fundraising efforts."
Smith is not a stranger to Terre Haute, having previously served as interim vice president of institutional advancement at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. His fundraising experience also includes work with The Leukemia Society of America and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Indiana State did not provide a timeline for naming a permanent successor to Carpenter.
