Indianapolis Power and Light Co. is seeking preliminary tax abatement approval on a $25 million battery storage project. The system would provide on-site storage for later use during periods of high power demand. In its request to the city, the utility says the technology will reduce emissions and increase reliability.

IPL says the project will not create jobs, but it will help retain nearly 800 existing positions.

The request will go before the Metropolitan Development Commission Wednesday and could be up for final approval early next month.
