Subscribe NowAs Hoosiers take to the polls on what has been a contentious election cycle, several observers heavily following the situation say Indiana is a battleground for big match-ups beyond the presidential race. A special edition of The INsiders this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television featured WIBC/Network Indiana Statehouse Bureau Chief Eric Berman, Faegre Baker Daniels LLP Government Advocacy and Consulting Group Director Jennifer Hallowell and Winston/Terrell Group Principal Robin Winston. Berman believes the Senate race between Democrat Evan Bayh and Republican Todd Young is the "marquee" contest on Indiana ballots.
Hallowell, a Republican, said "this is not the race that Democrats or Evan Bayh thought they were going to have." She contends the Democratic Party counted thought they had a victory in-hand before Election Day had even started.
Winston, a Democrat, said the outcome will have big implications at the state and federal levels. "One four-letter word: ‘sure.’ People of Indiana know about Evan Bayh, They know his track record. This man is not corrupt. They know what he’s done as governor, they know what he did as a U.S. Senator," said Winston.
Berman says, when we look back on this year’s election in the future, "we’re going to wonder what the heck happened. It’s like no election before, certainly in a hundred years. We’ll see if it sets a trend for other ones. It may be that 20 years from now this has become the norm. It’s definitely been unsettling because it certainly upset the established norms this year."
