Indy, Purdue Communities Remembering Jim Dora

Jim Dora, who spent 22 years on the city’s Capital Improvement Board of Managers, founded and chaired General Hotels Corp. The company was a developer and operator of multiple high-profile properties, including the Crowne Plaza Holiday Inn at Union Station. Dora was 80.
The Vincennes native was a Purdue University graduate who remained active in fundraising and leadership efforts related to the school and its Delta Delta Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He and his wife also launched the James and Shirley Dora Foundation, which provided educational grants to more than 200 hotel employees and their families.
Jim Dora served as president of the CIB from 1985 to 1993 and was instrumental in the helping the city land the Indianapolis Colts in a move from Baltimore. His leadership through the board was also key in the construction and operation of the Indiana Convention Center, Market Square Arena and the Hoosier Dome.
His additional board participation included the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, the Corporate Community Council, Downtown Indy Inc. Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the 500 Festival, American United Life Insurance Co. and the Mayflower Corp.
Dora twice received a Sagamore of the Wabash Award.
