A pop culture convention coming to Indianapolis this month has announced a major sponsorship agreement. Ohio-based The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) will serve as title sponsor for Indy PopCon.

May 19, 2014

News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. — Pop Con LLC and The Kroger Co have agreed to a sponsorship agreement to bolster the inaugural Indy PopCon convention, scheduled for May 31 – June 1 in the Indiana Convention Center. The convention is expected to draw 15,000 attendees over the three-day weekend and provide a strong economic impact to the city on what is traditionally a slow weekend after the Indianapolis 500.

The deal, which covers the 2014 convention with an option for 2015, will see Kroger branding highly visible at the event and through pre-event marketing materials. Kroger will have a significant booth space inside the Indiana Convention Center for its store and its co-sponsored brands, Pepsi, Frito-Lay, and Gatorade. PopCon branding and special ticket promotions will be available through in-store promotion in all 136 Indiana Kroger food stores and tickets to the event will be provided to students at Kroger-supported schools in Marion County.

“This partnership is perfect for us to help us engage with our target demographic through Kroger in-store promotions and their network,” said Larry Zore, Finance Director for Pop Con LLC. PopCon will feature kid-focused exhibits, art classes, and workshops to teach them and their parents about the art, gaming, and comic book industries. “Our hope is that a child who comes to our convention this year returns as a featured artist one day, and Kroger will help us deliver that message,” added Zore.

Kroger, in returns, sees the convention as an opportunity to support a locally grown event as they continue to expand in Indiana. John Elliott, Kroger spokesman, commented on the agreement, saying: “We are dedicated to this city and this state, and it’s not every day that an event as large as this can be considered a 'home grown' event.”

“It makes sense to support PopCon and their vision and we hope to see this grow to become one of Indy’s premier conventions and tourist attractions,” she added.
