A new report designed to illustrate challenges, provide a framework to measure progress and inform future strategies regarding the food system in Indianapolis has been released. The State of the Food System, released by the Indy Food Council, examines topics including local agriculture, the food economy, health and wellness, food access and food waste.

The organization says the report involved engaging stakeholders and experts to write, research, edit and review the final product. A news release describing the work says it "embodies the collective impact philosophy of the Indy Food Council" and "the Indy Food Council views a sustainable food system as one where people, place, and planet are all given consideration and a balance between the needs of each is pursued."

Key figures include:

  • 231 farms in Marion County and approximately 20,000 acres of agricultural land
  • food manufacturing sector jobs have an average annual wage of over $52,000 per year
  • Marion County has around 180 food pantries
