Indy Drops to 15th Largest City Indy Chamber members are in nine central Indiana counties.

Indianapolis has dropped one spot and is now the 15th-largest city in the nation. Population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the Hoosier capital, which had a population of 855,164 residents in 2016, fell behind Columbus, Ohio with 860,090 residents.

New York City remains in the top spot with more than 8.5 million residents, followed by Los Angeles with nearly 4 million, Chicago with 2.7 million and Houston with 2.3 million. Every city in the top 10 had more than 1 million residents in 2016.

The bureau also released figures on the fastest-growing cities with populations of more than 50,000 and four of the top five cities come from Texas. Conroe, Texas leads the way with a 7.8 percent population increase between July 1, 2015 and July 1, 2016.

Earlier this week, the Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business analyzed some of the Census data for Indiana, showing Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Carmel recorded the top three year-over-year population increases. Whitestown was also shown to be the state’s fastest-growing community for the sixth consecutive year.
