Indy Airport to Unveil Black History Mural

The Indianapolis Airport Authority will Tuesday unveil the “Madam Walker Legacy Mural,” an Official Indianapolis Bicentennial Community Project. The mural is 11 feet tall and 75 feet wide and was developed in partnership with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Madam Walker Legacy Center.
Local artist Tasha Beckwith, who painted the mural, will attend the unveiling. The airport says the artwork portrays Madam Walker’s lasting impact on the physical, social, cultural, and economic legacy of Indiana Avenue, the iconic Walker Theatre, and the city of Indianapolis.
The airport says the mural will be “prominently displayed” at the Indianapolis International Airport in Civic Plaza into 2022. Walker invented a line of African American hair products after suffering from a scalp ailment. She is listed as the first female self-made millionaire in the U.S. in the Guinness Book of World Records.
You can watch the unveiling live on Facebook on the Indianapolis International Airport Facebook Page at 1:30 p.m.
