Officials from Indianapolis International Airport and Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) have announced a new seasonal flight between Indianapolis and Cancun International Airport. The nonstop route is scheduled to provide weekly service beginning in March.
The Indianapolis Airport Authority says Cancun is considered the number one current international destination out of Indy. Delta Airlines and Vacation Express also have nonstops to the Mexican vacation destination. IAA has been focused on increasing its nonstop international options in recent years, targeting cities including London. In addition to Cancun, two other destinations outside the U.S. have nonstop service from IND: Punta Cana International Airport in the Dominican Republic and Toronto Pearson International Airport. The flight to Cancun is Southwest’s first international route from Indianapolis, which IAA Executive Director Mario Rodriguez says "sends a clear message that Southwest has strong confidence in the Indy market for further domestic and international growth and expansion."
Indianapolis International Airport touts 47 nonstops, the highest total since the current terminal opened in 2008.
Southwest Airlines has had a presence in Indianapolis for nearly 30 years and is considered the most prolific carrier at IND with around 40 daily departures to some 20 destinations.
