Executive Vice President Cullen McCarty says the company could deploy a fiber network within 90 days at the proposed development.
McCarty says the designation should show companies considering Columbus that the Walesboro Industrial Park is a legitimate option for location or expansion. The development is planned for the former Walesboro airport property, which is owned by the Columbus Economic Development Board.
Smithville says it is in the process of deploying a new fiber ring network throughout the state, increasing its commercial service capacity to more than 100 gigabits.
The Walesboro Industrial Park’s development is the latest sign of economic activity in Columbus. In November, Japan-based industrial machinery components manufacturer Daiei chose the city for its first North American operation. At the time, the company said it would invest more than $3 million to equip a production facility and create about a dozen jobs by 2017.
