The Restore I-94 initiative will include pavement upgrades, bridge rehabilitation, drainage improvements and traffic and safety enhancements.
INDOT says I-94 has traffic volumes among the highest in the country with "substantial" heavy truck traffic. The work is expected to last through the fall of 2016.
"High quality transportation infrastructure is one of the most important assets our State can leverage to grow our economy, create jobs, and attract and retain talent," said INDOT Commissioner Brandye Hendrickson. "INDOT’s investment to modernize I-94 demonstrates a strong commitment by the State to maintain Northwest Indiana’s transportation network to help the region excel in the 21st century economy."
INDOT says it is coordinating each project throughout the 45-mile stretch of interstate to minimize the impact to drivers. Drivers are asked to plan ahead for delays during peak hours, weekends and holidays.
