United States Postal Service veteran Christi Johnson-Kennedy will be the new Postmaster of Indianapolis after her installation Friday. She will become the first African-American woman to serve in the position.

Johnson-Kennedy began with the postal service in 2000 as a mail handler at the Indianapolis Processing & Distribution Center before later becoming a letter carrier. She was promoted to management and served in various Indianapolis city stations before being named Postmaster in Greenwood in 2015. She returned to Indianapolis in 2016 to serve as a manager in customer service operations.

“We love Indianapolis and love to do things as a family,” Johnson-Kennedy said. “We regularly visit the Indiana Museum of Art, the Eiteljorg Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum and the Indiana State Museum, and we love local art, music and heritage festivals.”

The Indianapolis native is a graduate of Lawrence North High School and IUPUI with a degree in criminal justice.
