Subscribe NowThe state is spending $123,000 to run a television commercial across Indiana during this weekend’s Super Bowl to continue the message about the need for COVID-19 vaccination. The message will showcase the family of Paul Loggan, the athletic director for North Central High School in Indianapolis, who died from the disease last April.
The video will air during local commercial breaks on CBS stations across Indiana which are carrying the game.
During Governor Eric Holcomb’s weekly COVID briefing, he said the state is taking advantage of the high number of viewers that typically watch the big game.
“It is worth every single penny,” emphasized Holcomb, who says the cost was paid for with federal CARES Act Funding. “I can’t think of another annual event that you would have more eyes on than a Super Bowl. And to be able to do it at that cost, just targeted locally, is a very effective way to communicate.”
During the 30-second commercial, Will Loggan, the son of Paul Loggan, talks about his father’s legacy and his family’s experience.
“He was a people’s man. Everybody loved my dad. After sporting events, he was always the last one to leave the gym, make sure everybody got a ride home safely. He wanted to take care of everybody from growing up to when he taught me how to play football and I wanted to follow his footsteps and everything,” said Will during the commercial.
The Indiana State Department of Health says Paul Loggan was diagnosed with COVID-19 after attending a basketball sectional last March. He died on Easter Sunday. He was 57 years old.
Loggan’s widow, Kathy, took part virtually in the news conference. She says advocating for the commercial is something Paul would support.
“He was always put others first always before himself,” said Kathy Loggan. “And even though he can’t be here right now with us, I kind of felt like this is his way of working through the children.”
It will air in six broadcast markets around the state during the game, with a projected audience of 1.7 million Hoosiers.

ISDH Commissioner Dr. Kris Box urges Hoosiers who watch this weekend’s game to take the necessary precautions.
“Do it safely by gathering virtually or only with members of your own household. If you’re going out to watch the game, wear your mask, practice social distancing, and make sure the venue is taking steps to prevent the spread of the virus,” said Box.
