Indiana University closes DEI office

Indiana University on Thursday announced it has closed the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
In a statement on the IU Today website, the university said the move comes as it works to ensure it is “fully compliant with state and federal laws and guidance” related to DEI.
IU said it is directing its regional campuses, schools and other units to taken necessary steps to ensure compliance as well.
The university also announced that its Office of Institutional Equity has been renamed the Office of Civil Rights Compliance, which “more accurately reflects its work and mission to oversee the university’s compliance with federal civil rights laws.”
“Where necessary, the university will communicate directly with relevant students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders to provide additional information and support,” IU said in a statement Thursday. “IU will continue to affirm its fundamental goal of ensuring every student is equipped to thrive — in the classroom and after graduation.”
President Donald Trump in January issued an executive order that bans “illegal discrimination” among higher education institutions. Since that time, other Indiana institutions, including Ivy Tech Community College and Ball State University, have ended their DEI initiatives.
