Indiana unemployment continues decline in May

Indiana’s unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a percent to 3.7% in May. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Tuesday that the state also added 8,400 private sector jobs in the same month.
May was the fifth consecutive month that the unemployment rate decreased.
The DWD said Indiana’s total private employment stands at 2,851,400. Indiana primarily saw job gains in the private educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; professional and business services; manufacturing; and construction sectors.
The state’s labor force participation rate stayed flat at 63.7%, higher than the national rate, which fell two-tenths of a percent to 62.4%. The labor force, which includes residents who are either employed or seeking employment, stands at 3,485,635, according to the DWD.
The DWD said the state had 87,114 open job postings as of June 1, while 21,755 continued unemployment insurance claims were filed as of the week ending June 7.
The state’s unemployment rate remains lower than the national rate, which stayed flat at 4.2%.
