The operators of the Indiana Toll Road have laid out a road map as it commits to reducing carbon emissions by 50% within the decade and be carbon neutral by 2050. Elkhart-based ITR Concession Co. says the goals involve not only direct emissions, such as ITR vehicles and equipment, but also indirect emissions from operations, such as electricity usage.

ITRCC says it is adopting the Science Based Targets initiative, a program developed by a global collaboration of environmental groups.

“We have the profound opportunity to build a more sustainable future,” said Nic Barr, ITRCC chief executive officer. “Our science-based initiatives will have a positive impact on the environment while also improving the efficiency of the Toll Road. Electric charging, high-efficiency equipment, and solar technology developments will bring a more sustainable travel solution to Northern Indiana.”

ITR says it will be installing electric charging stations at all of the travel plazas along the 157-mile roadway.
