The Chief Justice of Canada will visit the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis next month. Beverley McLachlin will host the James P. White Lecture on legal education.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Right Honorable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, will present the James P. White Lecture on Legal Education at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law on April 8. Her topic will be “Civility in the Age of the Internet.”

Chief Justice McLachlin’s judicial career began in April 1981 when she was appointed to the Vancouver County Court. In September of that same year, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. She was elevated to the British Columbia Court of Appeal in December 1985, and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in September 1988. Seven months later, in April 1989, she was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. On January 7, 2000, she was appointed Chief Justice of Canada. She is the first woman in Canada to hold this position.

Chief Justice McLachlin pursued her undergraduate education at the University of Alberta, where she graduated with honors with a bachelor of arts in philosophy. She undertook graduate studies at the same university, where she received a master of arts in philosophy and an LL.B. She practiced law before joining the academy in 1974, teaching at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Law for seven years as a tenured associate professor.

The lecture begins at 5 p.m. in the Inlow Hall Wynne Courtroom. A reception in the atrium will begin at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and carries with it 1.0 hour of CLE with a registration. About IU McKinney
