The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs says the designation will give the town the opportunity to act on its downtown revitalization plan.
The community organization Main Street Westport IN Inc. says it is working with other local groups to execute its plan. The organization says art students and the agriculture departments from South Decatur Schools will paint murals, test soil in the community garden and produce flower pots for the main street. Troops from the Westport Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will help water and maintain the flower pots.
Main Street Westport IN also plans to purchase an old building and repurpose it into a senior center.
"When a Main Street designation is given, it means the community is focused on improving their quality of place, particularly around the main street area," said Lt. Governor Holcomb. "Main Streets are vital in every community and the more time and effort that goes into improving a Main Street, the more benefits it will produce."
