Joshua Clayton currently serves as deputy state epidemiologist and director of the Epidemiology Resource Center for the Indiana State Department of Health.
Clayton is a native of South Dakota and a graduate of South Dakota State University. He will succeed Lon Kightlinger, who retired earlier this month.
"Translating data into action is an essential part of our Department’s mission to promote, protect and improve the health of every South Dakotan," said South Dakota Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon. "I’m excited for Dr. Clayton to join us in this important work."
Before joining the Indiana State Department of Health, Clayton served as an epidemic intelligence service officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has also spent time with the South Dakota Department of Health working in disease prevention and public health preparedness programs.
