The Westville native, who currently serves as a principal in the environment department for NiSource, will begin his new role in mid-October.
Plath succeeds Robert Daum, who retired from the position last November. Prior to joining NiSource, Plath spent 10 years with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and is also the founder and president of the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association.
The National Park Service says Plath led the effort to designate a portion of the Lake Michigan Water Trail as a National Recreation Trail. He also spearheaded an effort which led to the creation of the Kankakee River National Water Trail.
