Five Indiana-based companies are included among the "World’s Most Ethical Companies." The companies on the list, compiled by the New York-based Ethisphere Institute, were selected based on criteria including ethics and compliance programs, corporate citizenship and responsibility, and governance.

Indianapolis-based Anthem Inc. (NYSE: ANTM) joins the list for the first time since its inception in 2007. Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE: LLY) returns for the second consecutive year, followed by Merrillville-based NiSource Inc. (NYSE: NI: and Old National Bancorp (Nasdaq: ONB) in Evansville.

"Over the last 12 years, we have repeatedly seen that those companies who focus on transparency and authenticity are rewarded with the trust of their employees, their customers and their investors," Timothy Erblich, chief executive officer of Ethisphere, said in a news release. "While negative headlines might grab attention, the companies who support the rule of law and operate with decency and fair play around the globe will always succeed in the long term."

Some of the other metrics used to determine the list include culture of ethics and leadership, innovation, and reputation. Cummins has made the list every year since 2008, while NiSource and Old National have been on the list for seven consecutive years.
