News Release

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. – American Banker magazine has named Indiana-based Centier Bank among the nation's Best Banks to Work For. Centier ranked #17 among all banks in the U.S.A. The program, which was initiated in 2013 to identify, recognize and honor the best banks to work for in the nation, is a project of American Banker and Best Companies Group.

To be considered for participation, banks had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

Have at least 50 employees working in the US;

Be a Commercial Bank, Thrift, Mutual Association, Mutual Savings Bank, Savings and Loan Association or a Savings Bank.

Centier Bank was recognized for its exceptional corporate culture, which includes numerous work-life balance initiatives, including an on-site health clinic that is open to all employees with insurance, regardless of whether or not they are insured through the bank. Centier opened the OurHealth Clinic in April 2013 on Centier’s Merrillville campus, and has since opened locations in Valparaiso, and three locations in Indianapolis, with plans for more.

“We are honored to be amongst the top 20 banks in the U.S.A. and #1 bank in Indiana,” stated Mike Schrage, Centier Bank president and CEO. “Our community commitment begins with the experiences we provide to our employees. Our organization puts family values first and this translates into a unique corporate culture in today’s banking industry.”

Centier has been a recognized top employer in the state, having been on the Indiana Chamber of Commerece’s Top 10 Best Places to Work for the past eight years. The organization supports its workforce with many wellness amenities and incentives to create a healthy work-life balance. The company offers flexible scheduling, day care discounts, and senior care benefits for associates, parents, and grandparents.

In all, 40 banks achieved “Best Bank” status in this second year for the program. The full Best Banks to Work For list will be featured in the November issue of American Banker Magazine and will be available online at AmericanBanker.com.

Determining the Best Banks to Work For involved a two-step process. The first step consisted of evaluating each participating bank’s workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of employee surveys aimed at assessing the experiences and attitudes of individual employees with respect to their workplace. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top banks and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process and also analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final ranking.
