Greenwood-based Indiana American Water says the project will affect up to 50,000 lines served by the company throughout the state. The work is expected to be complete by 2042 at the latest, but Indiana American Water says it could be finished as early as 2028.
President Deborah Dewey says "we are positioned to proactively address the long-standing issue of lead service lines throughout the state in a way that expedites replacement and ensures that customers who are most impacted and can often least afford it will also benefit from our plan."
The company says it is the first water utility in Indiana to receive approval for a plan of this nature since the state approved legislation last year that allows utilities to replace customer-owned lead lines, which Dewey says "will positively impact water quality and our customers."
Indiana American Water, which bills itself as the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, is a subsidiary of New Jersey-based American Water (NYSE: AWK). It provides water or wastewater services to some 1.3 million people.
