I&M Unveils Power Grid Upgrade Plans

Fort Wayne-based Indiana Michigan Power has announced plans to invest $48 million in improvements to its power grid in Delaware and Madison counties. The utility will rebuild 21 miles of electric transmission line and retire seven miles of existing line.

I&M says the Muncie-Anderson Transmission Line Rebuild Project is necessary to "ensure continued reliable energy service is available to customers by reducing power outages and speeding recovery of service when outages do occur." The transmission line connects the Wes Del Substation to the Madison Substation.

Construction is expected to begin in fall 2018 and be complete by spring 2020.

The utility says the majority of the 21-mile line will be rebuilt at its current location. However, there will be some areas where the line will need to be re-routed and I&M has proposed alternative study segments for areas that would see the new construction.

I&M will host an open house September 20 for residents learn more about the project and the alternative study segments and provide feedback. The open house will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Yorktown High School.
