South Bend, Ind. — The Department of Community Investment and Real America Development, LLC will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of the LaSalle Hotel into market-rate apartments at 2 pm Friday, April 24. The event will be held onsite at the corner of St. Joseph Street and LaSalle Avenue.
Real America, a development company based in the Indianapolis suburb of Fishers, will start construction in May on converting the LaSalle into 51 one-bedroom apartments and 16 two-bedroom units as well as 8,000-square feet of commercial space on the ground floor and mezzanine level. The building is scheduled to reopen in spring 2016.
“We're very excited to be a part of the South Bend community,” says Ronda Shrewsbury Weybright, president and owner of Real America. “The fantastic downtown location will be attractive to young professionals, empty nesters, and others who want a place where they can walk to work, restaurants, and entertainment.” Real America has successfully restored historic buildings in other Indiana cities. One of the company's recent projects is the Randall Lofts Apartments, built in a century-old former warehouse in downtown Fort Wayne.
“This renovation is an important step in downtown South Bend's accelerating comeback,” Mayor Pete Buttigieg says. “Restoring important structures like the LaSalle Hotel will help drive more job growth and enhance the vibrant atmosphere in the heart of our city.”
