Two Indiana universities are once again ranked among the top schools in the country for hosting international students and participating in study abroad programs. The Institute of International Education has included the schools in its 2017 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange.

Purdue University ranks eighth overall in the top 25 leading host institutions list with 11,288 international students enrolled during the 2016-2017 academic year. The university’s ranking is the same as last year, though the number of international students is up from 10,563 in 2015-2016.

Purdue’s ranking in the study abroad category improved to 23rd with 1,993 domestic students studying abroad.

"In addition to sending more students overseas than ever before, we have also been focused on enhancing the intercultural learning experience of our students while they are abroad," said Michael Brzezinski, dean of international programs. "During the past year the Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research (CILMAR) trained nearly 100 faculty on how to adapt their curriculums to help students increase knowledge of worldview frameworks, develop greater empathy, improve verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and develop greater emotional resilience. All of these are skills that will help students in careers in the global workforce."

Indiana University ranks 19th overall for international student enrollment with 7,502 students. The university’s ranking dropped two spots, however the number of enrolled international students is up from 7,159 the previous year.

IU also ranks seventh for study abroad participation with 2,720 students studying abroad.

Purdue and IU are among 14 institutions to be ranked in the top 25 for both international student enrollment and study abroad participation. You can view the full ranking for international students by clicking here and study abroad participation by clicking here.
