Small towns were ranked on their average home sale price, tax friendliness to retirees, active adult communities and local health care options.
The Hoosier state made up 15 percent of the list.
The list recognized West Lafayette for its “small-city living and big-city excitement,” Goshen for its “Middle America vibe,” and Columbus for “very affordable home prices, a low cost of living, a strong local economy, and a high quality of life.”
55places used the U.S. Census to analyze metropolitan areas across the country with a population of 55,000 or less.
55places also eliminated other small towns based on local crime rates, cost of living, and extreme real estate prices, narrowing it down to 215 towns. The final 20 locations were chosen based on 12 weighted data points that related to standard of living.
